It is time once again for our monthly series, Styled Spotlight, where we are asking one creative wedding professional a series of questions so you can learn how they got started, why they love what they do, what they love most about Philadelphia, and more. Today we talk with Alison Conklin an award-winning photographer for weddings, engagements, families, and children, as well as editorial photography for lifestyle businesses.
1. Let’s get to know you! Tell us a little bit about your background.
I had grown up with a darkroom and had spent much of my teenage years developing black and white film. I was hired to photograph my first wedding when I was 18. I fell in love with documenting love and went full time in 2004.
2. How did you know that the wedding industry was the right fit for you?
I love documenting the honest emotions of a wedding. Being able to capture that was an instant love affair for me.
3. What do you love most about weddings in Philadelphia?
I appreciate the history – the cobblestone streets and the beautiful alleys. There is such amazing architecture and the gorgeous skyline.
4. How would you describe your aesthetic?
Candids and bright emotional images. My goal is to capture the emotion and happiness throughout the wedding day without turning the day into a photo shoot. Of course we do standard family formal photos in the church or in a spot outside but my favorite time of a wedding is the 30-60 minutes of taking fun artistic photos with the bridal party and the bride and groom.
5. What is one piece of advice you hope to impart on brides and grooms?
I would say just remember to take a moment for yourselves at some point during the day.
Five Favorites…
1. Element that always catches your eye?
I personally like the look of patterns and stripes. I think if used correctly it can be such a sharp design element.
2. Favorite spot for wedding photographs?
Old City – you can’t beat the history and colors that it offers.
3. Moment at a wedding?
The moment right before the newly married couple is going to walk back down the aisle together. There is such excitement and everyone is standing and clapping.
4. Destination you have traveled to for a wedding?
We have been lucky to travel for many weddings. A few of my favorite spots have been Florence Italy, Mexico, Bermuda, Ireland, Germany, Hawaii, Maine, Aspen CO, and California.
5. Hidden gem in Philadelphia?
I love Panama Street – it is such a hidden gem with beautiful homes and many different colors.
